Cubit Innovation Labs is proud to announce the launch of MUSAI (Modular Underwater System with Artificial Intelligence to fight marine pollution). This project, winner of the RI&SS N.5 Call for Proposals under the ARTES 4.0 Competence Center, is funded within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) – Mission 4 Component 2 “From Research to Business” – Next Generation EU.
The MUSAI project focuses on developing a modular underwater system powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address marine pollution, a global environmental challenge recognized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as one of the six most critical ecological emergencies worldwide. Every year, approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste enter the oceans, significantly endangering marine ecosystems.
This innovative technology will autonomously detect underwater waste using an advanced system equipped with salinity and chlorophyll sensors to monitor the health of aquatic flora and fauna. By leveraging AI algorithms, computer vision, and sensor fusion, the system will enable real-time, on-the-edge data analysis and transmission to a support vessel or remotely operated submarine. This optimized approach will ensure a more efficient, resource-effective, and cost-effective waste detection process without requiring highly specialized personnel.
The primary goal of the project is to develop a high-performance prototype within 12 months, tested in an operational environment and ready to be deployed for the protection of marine ecosystems.
Cubit will lead the design and development of the system, collaborating with the University of Pisa and a Pisa-based company that is a leader in the ICT sector. This partnership exemplifies the powerful synergy between academic research and industrial innovation.
