Development of a Solution for Indoor Air Quality Monitoring: Nuvap

Development of a Solution for Indoor Air Quality Monitoring: Nuvap

Designing a device to monitor, assess, and communicate indoor environmental health easily through a dedicated platform, considering various chemical and physical pollutants, including formaldehyde, electromagnetic pollution, and radon gas

Cubit has fully supported the electronic hardware and firmware design of Nuvap, the first IoT solution for monitoring numerous environmental parameters to measure the healthiness of homes and offices. These parameters include carbon dioxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, total volatile organic compounds (VOC), carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), temperature, and relative humidity. The multi-tenant platform, My.Nuvap, collects the data from the sensors, analyzes it, and presents it through simple and intuitive graphs via a web interface or mobile app. The system also issues alert notifications in case of threshold exceedance.

Cubit’s hardware and case design has made Nuvap devices extremely compact and aesthetically pleasing. To ensure the proper functioning of the device, the effectiveness of internal sensors in various conditions and the influence of operating temperatures on the collected data were evaluated through a thorough fluidodynamic assessment using numerical CFD methodology. To achieve this, a Digital Twin of the device was created and simulated at different ambient temperatures during operation, representing the thermal power dissipated by the electronic devices and batteries that ensure its operation. This helped prepare the necessary improvements to the case for a correct evaluation of the parameters of interest

All devices are connected to domestic or corporate WiFi, allowing them to transmit data to the cloud platform. Using sophisticated machine learning algorithms, individual devices can self-configure and calibrate without manual intervention, reading data from the environment they are placed in and from other connected devices in the network.

Nuvap can cover areas of up to 80 square meters, with a 60-day detection autonomy thanks to backup batteries and internal memory (before requiring data transmission to the cloud).

The development of the dashboard and management/notification functions enables real-time access to recorded environmental parameters, both via a browser and a mobile application, with the option to enable periodic reports and various types of alarms.

Since 2014, Cubit has been a partner in the startup’s journey, supported by subsidized funding from the Italian Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) – Invitalia. Cubit has followed all phases of development from ideation to the final product. This involved the initial concept, creation of the first prototypes, development of specially designed sensors, such as the radon sensor, overcoming challenges in integrating numerous sensors into a compact device, and ultimately achieving certification and final engineering.

In 2017, Nuvap was awarded the Edison Pulse prize as ‘Best Smart Home Technology’. In 2019, it won the eHealth4all award for the best prevention technology.
