Optimization of a Wing Sail shape for a small boat

The wing-sail is an interesting idea for sailboats, and the last America's Cup shown that its use is possible and very effective. Researchers at the University of Pisa applied this concept to a vessel for the inter-university competition "1001 vele," achieving satisfactory results with their initial design. To enhance performance systematically, the team employed direct numerical optimization techniques combined with STAR CCM+ CFD software.
